First things first though – What is a Funnel? In one short sentence, a funnel is the set of steps a visitor/prospect/client needs to go through before they can reach the conversion, in other words they buy something from you.

To make it absolutely clear for those just starting out and reading this, lets take Amazon as an example. Think about the Amazon purchase funnel. There are a few steps a visitor has to go through before they can purchase a product. Very simplistically this is how it looks:

  • They visit
  • They view a product/s.
  • They add a product to the shopping cart.
  • They buy the product.

The steps someone takes to buy a product is called a funnel because at the beginning of the process, there are a lot of people who take that first step, they are the traffic at the top of the funnel as seen in the image below. They have been attracted by an advert they have seen called a Lead Capture Page (LCP), which if the person wants to take advantage of what is advertised they need to enter their email address on the image for the advert, such people who enter their email address are then known as ‘Leads’.

Then, as the people continue along and take the next step they are shown the opportunity/product or programme that is being offered, some of them drop out, some stay on the email list but don’t purchase, for such people we then have the opportunity to connect with them via follow-up emails which either expand the virtues the opportunity/product or programme offers or we can introduce them to other products. The most important thing now though, going forward, is to remain connected to them and this is done via the follow-up emails, you can see by the time we reach this part of the funnel its smaller, meaning lots of people have now opted out of your funnel.

My explanation above also explains why the funnel starts off wide at the top and ends up being quite narrow at the bottom where the sales take place. Many people, the traffic, don’t purchase or take any further interest in our business funnel at all. The size of the crowd thins or narrows.
